WANSER-R 1.48a firmware update

Here is the latest firmware I was able to obtain for my NAS adapter, 1.48a. If you currently have a branded firmware (including the 1.42b from the post below), you will not be able to use this firmware due to the OEM name/webtag check.

There is a way to circumvent this checkwebtag issue. The WANSER-R uses two verifications when a firmware file is uploaded - it checks the firmware header for the proper OEM name and the file checksum before updating.

Warning: Do this at your own risk. All instructions provided as is. This may damage ("brick") your NAS and/or result in data loss. Read full disclaimer here.

If you currently have a 1.39 or earlier firmware you do NOT need these steps - just upload the firmware file for the 1.48 should work. These steps assume that you have the 1.42 MRT version of the firmware installed (from previous blog post).

Firmware Version G5S5020300148A0 L:1.17 . If you go to http://NAS/__config.htm, you should see VENDOR="MRT"; CHECKWEBTAG="1" [...]

To circumvent the webtag check and to upload the 1.48a, follow these steps:

1. Download this 1.38 firmware file. It has been altered to contain the MRT webtag. I did this with a hex editor by just comparing with the 1.42 MRT firmware file.

2. Unpack and upload the R3282_1_38a_MRT_header.bin to your WANSER-R

3. The WANSER-R should "think" a few seconds after the upload before giving you the incorrect file error. This is because the file passes the initial header check, but not the checksum.

4. Now open man_firm.html on the WANSER-R to force the update
http://NAS/man_firm.htm

5. The unit should reboot and once completed will be running the 1.38 firmware again. If the unit does not reboot after the update wait 5 mins then reset it to default settings: Unplug, push and hold reset button, plug back in and wait for 30 seconds, while still pushing the reset button, then power cycle again.

6. Now just update your firmware to the 1.48a from this post, the 1.38 firmware will accept this file and it will change your vendor to BASIC and your webchecktag to 0: VENDOR="BASIC"; CHECKWEBTAG="0". Again, if the unit does not reboot after the update, wait 5 mins then reset it to default settings: Unplug, push and hold reset button, plug back in and wait for 30 seconds, while still pushing the reset button, then power cycle again.

Once you have the checkwebtag set to 0, you can upload any firmware - just keep in mind that any branded (MRT or Addonics) firmware version 1.41 or higher will set the checkwebtag to 1 again.

Good luck.

JCSP - Thank you. Using a hex editor and the firmware you pointed to also worked for me. I'll point out that one must replace -BASIC *plus* the next 3 characters with -addonics or the size of the .bin file changes, which doesn't work.

I'm happy, because with this firmware, files copied through the NAS adapter now retain their date / timestamps, something that the Addonics firmware didn't do.

Hello

Just dropped by to say that I succesfully updated my NAS-Addonics with Firmware 1.56d Pearl PX8020 found on this site: http://ulc.sudhop.com/.

Since I had an Addonics branded firmware I had to hex-edit all the "-BASIC" entries and replaced them with "-addonics", this did the trick wonderfully.

Thanks to everyone on this blog for their respective inputs.

Hi,

i have made the update to 1.55. When i configure the FTP-Server or the SMB Server, i see the buttons highlighted, this means i can´t click on them. When i plug in the USB Memory Stick, i will see the Hardware (1GB, 982MB free, but showns as not formated) The format option will bring an error when i start it.

The same problem was under original firmware too.

Latest Firmware 1.55a is out now! Ready patched for PEARL and other Brands!

have a look here: ulc.sudhop.com

When you do the update with the 1.55 do a hard reset.

Resetting the NAS adapter to the factory settings
• Press and hold the „Reset“ key.
• Disconnect the power supply from the NAS adapter. Wait shortly and then connect the power
supply to the NAS adapter again.
• Hold the „Reset“ key for 30 seconds more and release it only after that.
• Now, the factory settings of the NAS adapter are activated again, all settings (except for SAMBA/
FTP settings) will be lost!

I tried the new 1.55a firmware on a NAS dongle from Conrad:
http://www1.conrad.nl/scripts/wgate/zco

I first followed the route in the article (thanks for the info!). I then uploaded the new 155a firmware from
http://www.humanmedia.pl/uls3282.html

I had to reset the unit to log back in: admin password was garbaged. The reset caused the IP config to disappear but the users stayed. So it worked perfectly ever after.

(tested ok on my webtag unlocked Wanser-R).
The usual thread at lowyat closed down, and was providing Kernel (aka partial) updates lately.

YES !!!

it was not dead, but the full reset changed the configured IP !!!
So if you can't connect after reset, use the SearchUtility !!

Now it seems to be the 1.54 on it... let's see what it brings...

Hi Folks,

After some hacking as descirbed here I was also able to flash 1.54.
But I also had the Login-Problem - neither admin:admin nor my old admin:pwd did work. So I tried the reset-procedure... now my NAS seems to be dead :-(

Mybe to much playing? By the way: how does this 30senconds-reset work? Is there a Basic firmware somewhere internally stored or is it dead once I have a corrupted firmware in the flash?

Greetings,
Adam

Ich habe die Firmware mal für den Pearl NAS-Server PX-8020 umgeändert!
Die Datei ist auf meinem Upload-Center zu finden.
Version ist:

V 1.48p (ist Version A, das "P" steht für Pearl)
L 1.17 W 1.14

Damit wird es dann ein Wanser NAS-Server!

Hi to all,

firmware: v1.52c is ok. Only the Admin password is not allowed any more.
Please use the default: 2x admin (for login and password), and it works fine. Then change again to your own pw. :-)

Worked for me!

Anyone can say where we can get the firmware 1.48a?
I'm still using the version 1.42a which seems to have many bugs...

Thanks in advance.

Got the printer server and USB-HD to work simultaneously.
connected printer and HD to active USB hub, connected Hub to Perl PX8020 with V1.48 firmware, disk works fine, printer works fine.

Printer confirmed to work: Samsung ML-2240 (low budget b/w laser)
Printer setup instructions in Wanser-R manual apply 100% and seem more detailled than Pearl manual.

Good luck with the Conrad de-branding.
Foksadure

After the PEARL branded Wanser-R, it seems Conrad has a special version of the device (34.95 on Conrad.de and 39.95 Euros on Conrad.fr (!) ).

http://www.conrad.fr/adaptateur_reseau_

Art.-Nr.: 971924-62

Manual :
http://www1.produktinfo.conrad.com/date

Hardware wise, it sports an extra 12V output, and a switch to disable the USB without unplugging anything.

The UI is branded RALLY NETWORK and it looks like a massively scaled-down version of the software : no FTP, no BT, and no SMB since the device requires a software on the client PC to access the USB mass storage device content.

Any volonteer to try a BASIC 1.48a firmware update ? ^^

Schubi

I can confirm that the 1.48 firmware updates fine on the Pearl branded PX 8020, after replacing all "-BASIC" with "-Pearl" in the firmware .bin file. Good job!

On a different matter, has anyone tried yet, to use the device as both NAS and print server simultaneously? Will it recognise a printer and a HD when they're connected to the device via an USB Hub? Any general experience with the print server functionality? What printers have been found to work?

Rgds,
Schubi.
Sebi

Hi Carsten,
YOU'RE THE MAN!!
It worked also perfectly for me!! Thanks!

Carsten

I've tried to update the firmware for my 7Links NAS server from PEARL as described above (actual firmware version: PX-8020 V1.42B L1.17). Nothing succeeded. So i'm frustrated. Then i've got an idea - the vendor "Pearl" has the same length as "BASIC". So i've changed the two occurences of "-BASIC" in the firmware file to "-Pearl". Then i tried to update the firmware in normal way - it succeeds! No error message, no checksum failed. After a reboot the new firmware v1.48a is working.

Sebi

Hi Sky,
Maybe you could help me with the trouble I have!?
I bought the 7Links NAS server from PEARL (http://www.pearl.fr/reseaux/reseaux-filaires/serveurs-de-fichiers-impression/serveur-nas_PX8020.html ).
It consists exactly in the same hardware as the WANSER-R.
I would like to upgrade the firmware! (Actual Firmware Version: PX-8020 V1.42B L1.17)
The trouble is that CHECKWEBTAG is set to "1" and VENDOR to "Pearl".
Hence, as 1.38 firmware file you propose was altered to contain the MRT webtag, it doesn’t work with the PEARL webtag properly...
I was not able to modify that file properly with a hex editor to make it contain the PEARL webtag as I have no PEARL firmware file to compare with. (The 7Links website ( http://www.7links.net/ ) is under construction and I couldn’t find it on the internet.)
Could you help me with that issue? Help would be greatly appreciated...
Sebi

Sky

For some reason, if you alter the header for the 1.48a, the web interface does not get updated and the checktag is not set to 0 - basically you end up with a MRT locked 1.48a. I think this is because the html portion does not get updated in this case, which in turn does not update the __config.htm.
Foksadure

Hello again.

Confirmed : your method worked like a charm on my OEM WANSER-R.

I guess the folks at http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/832922/+220 will be happy to know that they can get the fancier Web interface on theirs.

The BT improvements alone are worth the update IMHO.

Thanks for the detailed procedure.

I wonder if it would work just by adding the -MRT tag in the header of the 1.48a binary, and force the update to bypass the checksum validation...

Cheers.
Administrator (Sky)

Ok, so I have updated the instructions, as I missed an important step - sorry, I initially figured this out at 4am, so I didn't exactly keep good notes, but the outlined process with the altered 1.38 should work for anyone on the MRT firmware track.
Foksadure

Hey, and thanks for all the tips.

No luck here tough to update an OEM WANSER-R (VENDOR="MRT") that shipped with G5S5020300142B0 L:1.17, with both your link to the 1.48A binary and the one found at http://www.humanmedia.pl/uls3282.html (which is oddly not of the same size !?).

I figured out the "man_firm.htm" URL by searching for strings in the R3282_1_48a.bin file, but it won't flash the uploaded file no matter what. Even tried to send the loader32_1_17.bin first, which works ok, but it won't take the firmware binary after that.

Too bad. I could use the improved BT page... :(
Sky

Strange, sorry I've no other suggestions. Keep an eye on

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/832922/+220

they may post a better solution.
Brian Bolton

Thanks Sky, Unfortunately this didn't work for me.
Sky

You just need to go thru the update, click OK on the window telling you that the file is incorrect, then just open

http://IP/man.cgi

It should then complete the update. That worked for me.
Brian Bolton

I have 1.42b and bootloader 1.17 and cannot update die to the CHECKWEBTAG issue. Do you have more info on the workaround? Thanks
rubik2k

I've got the firmware 1.42b and bootloader 1.17. How can I update my NAS to firmware 1.48a by web? Thanks!
