Addonics USB NAS Adapter Dongle with BitTorrent!

After my efforts to add network attached storage to my Asus router failed (well, it did work, but only with USB 1.1 speed) I started looking for a flexible solution to attach a large hard drive to my network.

After looking at some strange IDE NAS drive enclosures on eBay, I came across the Addonics NAS Adapter - a small network dongle that provides the missing link between ethernet and USB. The feature list on the website was perfect, as the unit supports both SMB ("Samba" = Windows networking) and FTP and on top of that has a build in Bit Torrent client. For $55 the price was right and I ordered the adapter from ShopAddonics.com.

I have been using the NAS Adapter for a week now and I am quite impressed. I am using the unit with a 500GB Hitachi SATA drive in an USB 2.0 enclosure and the adapter recognizes and uses the hard drive flawlessly. Over SMB I get speeds around 8MB/sec when using Ethernet and around 2MB/sec over Wifi, which is in line with the expected speed for those networks. The NAS adapter runs smoothly even under heavy load (4 torrents, uploading to the HDD via wifi and streaming a video off the drive at he same time is no problem). The unit is entirely controlled via a web interface and can act both as a DHCP client or server. Both SMB and FTP allow multiple users and access levels.

The build in bit torrent client is reasonably fast and can handle up to 4 downloads simultaneously. Performance is quite solid and the unit is capable to resume downloads after a reboot (even though the manual claims differently).

Overall I am quite impressed with this small device and was curious to find out what's ticking on the inside. Unfortunately, the casing had no visible way of opening it and I didn't want to break the small device, so I did some Internet research.

What I found:

This device is an OEM product, meaning that Addonics only does QA control, but did not develop this unit. The 'official' part number seems to be WANSER-R. I was not able to find the actual manufacturer, but on the inside seems to be a RDC R3210 system on a chip. the R3210 is a 32bit RISC processor, running at 133Mhz. It has buildin ethernet and USB, plus dual DMA controllers, making it quite fitting for the job.

You can find the specs sheet of the R3210 in PDF here.

My Addonics NAS Adapter came with firmware 1.33c, which was stable but I found a 1.42b update on the this site (look for WANSER-R). Make sure you read the included readme. The 1.42b appears to be solid as well and I've noticed an increase in BitTorrent performance. Unfortunately, Addonics has not made any of the recent firmware updates available through their site. The unit appears to be linux based and there is an OpenWRT build for the R3210, but I did not make any attempt at flashing this unit with 3rd party firmware.

Hi,

I bought an addonics NAS 2 adapter directly from Addonics for use as a NAS with the Sonos music system. I have no trouble installing it or using the FTP server. I have not tried the bit torrents server or the xbox support.I have a HP722c printer connected with a parallel to USB connector cable. This did not work on the print server port of the addonics.I dont think it is addonics fault though..the printer I think is a PPA printer and does not allow bidirectional support.

Cheers,
Sandeep

Where can I find the firmware?
The link doesn't work ...

Do you know if the latest addonics firmware is newer than the 1.48a? it is NASU2FW46A.

Ok i screwed up the flash and only the first part went through, the second part failed and i stupidly restarted the device. Now it won’t connect, doesn’t get an ip and the reset button does nothing.

Any idea on how to get it back?

I believe most of these devices are limited to 1MB flash which is not enough for OpenWrt, but what you can do is put just the Linux kernel in the flash and then make it boot a root file system from a USB device.

You can find details of a device pre-configured to do this at http://www.bifferos.com. I believe it is very similar hardware
to the Addonics.

kicko,

the drive uses a modified version of FAT32. You need to format the drive with the unit according to my manual (that also creates some folders and config files). The unit has a 2TB drive size limit (same as FAT32) but does not have file size limit of 4GB (which FAT32 has), i.e. over the network the unit can handle lager files, however, those files cannot be read from the drive when hooked up directly to your computer via USB.

If you want to format the drive on your computer, so a search for 'fat32 format utility', there are several tools available.

Hi,

I bought one too. The OEM is http://www.mrt-communication.com/WANSER-R.htm
The specs on the site say that it supports NTFS, but mine does not. Even with the new firmware from http://www.embeded-systems.net/firmware.htm. Can you tell me, what file system are you using on your 500GB drive?

Another thing - i have found that it does not support multiple partitions. In case you have more than one partition on your drive, it will recognize only the first one. This makes me think, that connecting more than one drives via USB hub will not work.

Cheers,
Kicko.

Hey Salim,

first I would check if you have the latest firmware, if not update to the 1.34c. Then you want to make sure that the NAS adapter actually connects to the Internet - best way IMHO is to set the timeserver under 'Date and Time' to time.windows.com and then see if the NAS adapter sets the time correctly after a power circle. You also need to open a port in your firewall/router, default is 6881. This feature is sometimes called 'virtual server' and you want to open both TCP and UDP. Check your router manual. Finally, make sure that the torrent file has sufficient seeders - a popular file may be best for testing.

Good luck!

Hey, you must really know what you're doing. My biggest problem is that I cannot get the torrents to download. I've tried everything and I still can't get them started on the NAS dongle! Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks
